The Importance of High pH

It is essential to understand the importance of pH and its relationship to your health. The symbol “pH” is used to describe acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0 (more acidic) to 14 (more alkaline). pH testing strips can be purchased at you local drug store. These can be used to test the pH of your saliva or urine.

The pH level of your body is significant to your state of health. Bacteria and viruses will not thrive when your pH level is 7 or higher. In the cycle of nature, it is acid that triggers decomposition. Daily application of acidic products to your skin, over time, causes premature aging.

There are many factors that affect your pH level. Diets high in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in cooked foods (cooking kills enzymes and acidifies food) can boost your alkaline level. It is essential to keep your body free of toxic buildup with healthy elimination, exercise, and proper skin hygiene. It is also important to stay adequately hydrated with plenty of pure water.

Why Use All Natural Skin Care Products?

Have you ever counted how many cosmetics or personal care products you use in a day?

According to a survey by the Environmental Working Group (EWG)) and a coalition of public interest and environmental health organizations, the average adult uses 9 personal care products each day. This produces repeated exposure to an average of 126 Different chemical ingredients on a daily basis.

On average, 60% of what you apply to your skin is absorbed into your body. This number may be higher when the widely used ingredient Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is included in a product. It has the effect of allowing chemicals to penetrate your skin more easily. With repeated exposure to multiple chemicals linked to common health hazards, the potential adverse effect on your health is very real.

It is a little known fact that our government does not mandate safety studies on cosmetics and skin care products. 89% of the 10,500 ingredients that the FDA has documented in personal care products have not been assessed for safety by the cosmetic industry’s review panel, the FDA, or any publicly accountable institution. Consumers assume that if a product is sold to the public, it must be safe.

It is not commonly known that industrial chemicals are basic ingredients in many personal care products. Products often contain carcinogens, reproductive toxins, harmful surfactants, endocrine disruptors and pesticides—all of these to be applied to the human body!

More than one-third of all personal care products contain at least one ingredient linked to cancer. Added fragrances, present in at least 50% of all personal care products, often contain a dangerous cocktail of chemicals, some neurotoxic.

According to the FDA and industry reviews, 70% of all personal care products have ingredients that may contain harmful impurities, including carcinogens. The absorption of these ingredients is often intensified by other ingredients that facilitate product penetration into the bloodstream.

Some parabens (chemicals such as Methylparaben and Propylparaben) are potential endocrine disruptors. This raises concern for the possibility of increased risk for cancer (especially breast cancer), decreased fertility, and impaired fetal development.

When risky chemicals are used in cosmetics, the stakes are high. Chemicals are the base ingredients in most skin care products, not just trace amounts like the part-per-million or part-per-billion found in food or water. Nearly all chemicals found in skin care products penetrate the skin easily.

Why would we want to be guinea pigs for the skin care industry? It is time to start reading labels and choosing safe and natural personal care products for ourselves, our families, and our environment.
